We are the Red Hill Valley Neighbourhoods Association (RHVNA), an incorporated, non-profit neighbourhood association, located in east Hamilton, Ontario Canada.
The Red Hill Valley Parkway (formerly expressway), which opened in November of 2007, was constructed down the middle of the Red Hill Valley; a corridor with pre-existing residential neighbourhoods on either side. Post-construction, many of these homeowners found their rear yards literally on the edge of this major highway; and families and homes in the surrounding area are being negatively impacted by the noise and air pollution generated. Furthermore, as of 2009 residents also became affected by flooding issues which may also be proven to be the result of the parkway’s construction.
RHVNA believe that the City of Hamilton has been insensitive to the plight of Red Hill Valley neighbourhood residents and uncooperative with regards to recognition and mediation of parkway related problems. Example: post-construction noise monitoring – that should have been performed by the city in pre-location sites – has not been done. This apparent ambivalence on the part of the city of Hamilton has forced RHVNA to consult with and, in some cases, hire professional noise, flooding and air quality experts and consultants to conduct studies and monitor the impacts of the noise and pollution on the health and welfare of our residents.
The effects of the expansion of existing highways, along with the building of new ones, are snowballing into major health and residential issues for many communities, and similar highway related problems stretch right across Canada.
RHVNA continue to represent the interests of residents living along the Red Hill Creek Valley, who have been and continue to be impacted by the construction of the Red Hill Creek Parkway
